boyhood experiences in Scotland in WWII led him to express the
dramas and horrors of those times. His little tableaux of landscapes
and figures, encased in glass-fronted boxes, are a strange mixture
of toy and tragedy, their dusty and timeless air give the impression
of faded war-time souvenirs, and yet the chilling model of a
concentration camp, made as if a toy for a German child to play with
in Nazi times, bring his work sharply into focus...
