Andrew Edlin Gallery is pleased to present Carl Binder:
Paintings and Drawings from September 9 - October 30, 2004. This
will mark the first exhibition of the artist's work outside of
Europe.
A farmer's son, Carl Binder (1906-1985) began drawing and
painting seriously in 1960 after retiring from a life as a farmhand
in
Baldingen, Switzerland in the canton of Aargau just outside of
Zurich.
Binder was a keen observer. Each morning at sunrise he was
known to have taken long walks in the fields. Completely self-taught, Binder painted and drew scenes of working cows or
steaming horses, and pastoral landscapes that occasionally
included the figure of a woman.
Binder was able to sell only a very few pieces during his lifetime.
A
scheduled museum show in the Kunsthaus Aargau was cancelled
after the death of the curator Heiny Widmer. The works of Carl
Binder are included in private and public collections in Switzerland
including the Lagerhaus Museum in St. Gallen.
